Finding Your "Why"
Sep 9, 2025

When it comes to working out and eating healthy, we hear over and over that clients need to find their “why”. Why do they choose to train and take care of themselves? What is the purpose of them working out? It’s an important question to know the answer to because it will determine your results and your drive!
There are common answers such as, “I just want to look good” or “I want to lose weight so I can look more toned at the beach or the pool.” While there is nothing wrong with either of those statements at a healthy level, I can tell you from experience, that a “why” purely based on looks will lead to disappointment. When you focus on how you look over everything else, you will never be satisfied. When you are training properly, you will have seasons of growth where you may not be 100% satisfied with the way you look. Sometimes our bodies need a little bit of fat so that we can put on muscle. We need that muscle so that we can look toned once we enter a cut. But this can sometimes lead to feeling uncomfortable. On the other end of the spectrum, a lot of people feel more uncomfortable when they are lean rather than fuller. Our bodies are constantly changing and we are going to have seasons of frustration with the way we look. Body dysmorphia unfortunately is extremely common and can be a huge factor in messing with our heads.
So, how should I determine my why? Here are a few tips! Focus on how you want to feel over a number on the scale. Is healthy eating and working out a stress relief or an outlet for you? Is it a small part of your day that you can just focus on yourself and know you are doing something good for your body? Do you enjoy challenging your mind and body and moving it in a way that lets you test the limits of what it was made to do? Does it bring you confidence knowing that, day after day, you can accomplish difficult things that the majority of the population does not do? Is it for the post-workout endorphins that can push anxiety and depression out of your way?
Living a healthy lifestyle can be hard but when your why is something that you can live out and feel accomplishment from time and time again no matter what phase you are in, it can take the journey from hard to purposeful! When a lifestyle has a unique purpose just for you, there is no room for comparison. You can accept the way your body will go through phases, find satisfaction in your why (your purpose) and you can allow space to give yourself grace all along the way.
